The Vestax Typhoon looks good and the layout is excellent and efficient, especially for those new to digital DJing. The black and red color scheme is sleek, but how you feel about this is a personal opinion rather than a professional one.

  • The Vestax Typhoon is a small and compact DJ controller that can now be more powerful than ever before with this new full-featured DJ software. The price of a brand new Vestax Typhoon costs only.
  • SKU: TYPHOON Manufacturer part number: TYPHOON Manufacturer: VESTAX. Typhoon is an all-in-one bundle of digital DJ hardware and software, offering total control to mix, scratch, and play music as a DJ would right at your fingertips. The included software transforms your computer into a full-blown DJ system.

Vestax’s entry-level DJ controller, the Vestax Typhoon, is now officially available with Virtual DJ software. The compact, basic controller for beginners and hobbyists previously came bundled with Traktor, but now also comes with Virtual DJ, in a specially skinned Typhoon edition (see picture).

The change means that the most popular beginner’s software is now paired with one of the leading beginner’s DJ controllers, and answers a request made by many Virtual DJ users who were frustrated at not having any “out of the box” way to use the Vestax Typhoon.

Good for first-time DJs
The move makes sense for beginner DJs; while immensely powerful, Traktor is not the easiest software to learn to DJ on, and a controller with as few hardware knobs and buttons as the Vestax Typhoon struggles to control many of the features of Traktor anyway.

While Virtual DJ still comes packed with features (and can be used for video DJing too), it is still at heart straightforward DJ software that it is reasonably easy to get up and running on quickly – something important for people learning the skills of DJing for the first time.

This seems to us like a sensible move by Vestax, and one many of our readers will be pleased to hear about.

Many DJs give up or never get started on their dream of being a professional DJ because equipment can be outrageously expensive. Even with the technology of digital DJing, the price of all the equipment and software can costs hundreds or thousands of dollars. For most of us, that is too much to pay for something you might not ever get paid to do, right?

Wrong.

There are many DJ controllers on the market that are priced right so that aspiring DJs of any budget can get started right way. One of those controllers is the Vestax Typhoon. It comes with a built-in sound card so that’s one less thing you have to fork over cash to buy.

Vestax Typhoon Set Up

First and foremost you can use the Typhoon DJ controller whether you’re a Mac or PC person, and you can use Traktor software, which pretty much most DJs use already. The device is strictly plug and play with Traktor LE so you don’t have to worry about convoluted set up instructions that steal half the day away from you.

Jog Wheels

This DJ controller will require you to make use of the jog wheels quite often, and unlike many jog wheels on the market these babies are high quality so you don’t have to worry about wobbly or sticking jog wheels after a few spins. You get the authentic look and feel of spinning and scratching, the same way you would with an actual record.

Controls

The controls are perfectly laid out so even a beginner will be able to work the Vestax Typhoon. The decks are separated right down the middle so the right side controls the right deck and the left side controls the left deck. The cup, cue and play buttons are set up for functionality so you can easily and precisely cue up songs, skip songs or return to start as needed.

The sync button is a novelty that most DJs will love because it allows you to sync up songs at the same speed. This is a great way to experiment with scratching and slowing down music simultaneously for your own unique sound.

Filters

The built in filters on the Vestax Typhoon provide an effective way to learn different DJ tricks. For example you can hit the filter button on one deck that is playing while you move the jog wheel right or left and this will give you a high or low pass filter, which is a common DJ effect. You may not know it by the description, but give it a try once and you’ll know exactly that it is!

The other feature filters are high quality but not exactly 100% accurate. The cross fader is solid but the tempo faders can be difficult to adjust with any type of precision. Overall the quality is solid but lacking in accuracy.

Music Navigation

One thing every DJ needs from his or her controller is quick and easy access to the music. Vestax has made it easier than ever with the browse control feature that lets you choose the play list in Traktor. You can scroll through your library until you find the songs you want and then load them into the appropriate decks.

This is great for new DJs terrified of having to pay more attention to the laptop than the crowd and your performance.

Software

When you buy Vestax Typhoon DJ controller you will get a pared down version of the Traktor software, known as Traktor LE. The LE version is sufficient to get you started but as you progress as a DJ you will want to make the upgrade to full Traktor software.

Vestax Typhoon Manual

Traktor LE is fine software, but when you want to experiment with different effects and start recording your own mixes you will not only want, but need to make the change to fully functioning software.

Body

How a DJ controller looks and transports is just as important as how it performs. The Vestax Typhoon looks good and the layout is excellent and efficient, especially for those new to digital DJing. The black and red color scheme is sleek, but how you feel about this is a personal opinion rather than a professional one.

Since the DJ controller is really intended for beginner DJs, those weekend warriors and home DJs you shouldn’t expect the best overall quality for the body. When you consider price and target audience, it should come as no surprise that most of the machine is made from plastic.

Although it is plastic, it is fairly sturdy and with a carrying case you can extend the shelf life of the Typhoon controller. If you travel to DJ in any capacity, a carrying case or protective cover is an essential investment.

Love It or Leave It?

The Vestax Typhoon DJ controller is a solid machine that users will enjoy while they learn to DJ. The price ($300) is right for the available features and software options, so those who are just starting out won’t break the bank.

You should expect to learn a lot while using this DJ controller but you shouldn’t expect a lot in terms of DJ capabilities. Scratching, for example, is possible with this machine but not pro level scratching. To do this requires much more skill and a much better piece of equipment than the Typhoon.

Be careful with the machine and get something to carry it in or you’ll be searching for a new DJ controller within 18 months. If you’re new to DJing and looking for an inexpensive way to get started, get your Vestax Typhoon Midi ControllerNOW!
